Games are Art. Art invites Critique, it can't escape it.
The thing is, though, RPG is such a vague term. Halo is a game where you play the role of the Master Chief, though it's not an RPG because the point is to shoot things and not embody the character. I think Mass Effect 2 earns its RPG bonafides because its focus on how your play your character's role within a story. I think it's actually a fairly innovative idea, an RPG without the classic RPG elements... some of which can be pretty dated in a modern game setting.
